Asbestos Inspection Risk Assessment
Risk Assessment Grading System – Simple system
The conducting of a risk assessment as part of the audit offers compliance with Regulation 3 of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
• Systematically identifies the hazards arising from or associated with your work, and who may be harmed.
• Establishes the likelihood of harm from the hazards being realised i.e. the risk.
• Identifies what is already being done to deal with the hazard
• A risk assessment, evaluates the likelihood that a hazard will cause harm and its severity and advises on how to eliminate or further reduce and control the chance of harm.
Definitions
“HAZARD” The property of a substance, article or situation which has the potential for damaging people, property, plant, processes or the environment.
“RISK” The likelihood that a hazard will cause damage to people, property, plant, processes or the environment.
“CONSEQUENCE” The likely outcome if an event occurs or the severity.
Risk Assessment Action
The following action should be taken following the allocation of risk rating:
HIGH considering what is being done already.
IMMEDIATE action to lower the level of risk is mandatory. Further exposure to the identified risk should be prohibited.
MEDIUM considering what is being done already
The project, equipment, system of work or workplace should be re-designed into a LOW category or other additional controlling actions must be introduced such as:
a) Provide further training and information;
b) Introduce special work instructions;
c) Provide close supervision of work;
d) Introduce permit to work systems;
e) Introduce alternative work equipment, sites or routes;
f) Introduce physical environmental controls;
g) Introduce personal protective equipment.
Whenever these additional measures are required, it is essential that employees are informed of both the risks and the measures being taken to protect them.
LOW considering what is being done already
No further action is required except monitoring and maintaining controls.
